It is with joy that we announce the completion of Phase One
of PCFL Memory Garden. We were blessed with a warm November and December which
made it possible to construct the stone wall, install pavers, and plant larger
trees and shrubs.
The enclosed photographs show the results. As planned, this area was developed in a very
natural way to enhance the landscape of the church. In the spring we will plant flowers and small
shrubs, install three teak benches, and mulch the surrounding area.
As of this date, total contributions received are $12,180,
including funding of three teak benches. The Fernstroms have advanced the
Memory Garden Fund $2225 and are committed to an additional $2500 in the spring
(depending on what additional donations are received). This is in addition to
their donation of $4000 for the garden and $1000 for a bench. We hope that
others will contribute during 2008 to repay the Fernstroms and enable the work
still to be completed. The $4725 loan
will be reimbursed to the Fernstroms with additional contributions from others.
If these funds are not received by December 31, 2008, it will be considered a
gift from the Fernstroms. For this to be truly a PCFL project, it would be
helpful if most of the funding were not given by one family. Any additional
donations over and above the loan repayment will be used for additional
plantings and development of the area immediately surrounding the Garden.
Additional teak benches might be placed in this area. Donors interested in
contributing $1000 for a bench in memory of a loved one, should contact us.
A bronze plaque and sculpture are also being contemplated
for the Garden. Donations should be written to “PCFL” indicating “Memory
Garden” in the memo of the check. If you would like your donation to be made in
memory of a specific person, please advise us.
It was decided to use upgraded materials, landscaping
enhancements and add a handicap access walkway in Phase One to assure the
quality and beauty of the site. This resulted in increased costs but we believe
they were justified. The stones chosen for the wall are large and smooth enough
to be engraved with the names of those whose cremains will be placed on the
church grounds. The pavers were selected to complement the stone wall and are
of a long-lasting quality. Boulders were moved from behind the manse and placed
throughout the garden to enhance the natural setting. Trees and shrubs were
more reasonable because they were purchased in the fall. Bulbs were planted in
the berm above the garden.
The PCFL Memory Garden will provide a calm and quiet space
for prayer and reflection
Ashes will be interred in biodegradable containers or
dispersed in the surrounding gardens. Those whose cremains are at PCFL and
those who have been memorialized through specific donations will be
acknowledged. We hope that you will consider joining us in supporting this
project. Plans will be announced for a Dedication Ceremony in the spring.
